RIM warns of lower subs despite Storm

Black Berry StormResearch in Motion late Tuesday warned that it expects the number of new subscribers to its BlackBerry push e-mail service to fall significantly below its original estimates. The Canadian smartphone company now expects to add just 2.6 million users instead of the originally predicted 2.9 million and also expects its earnings per share and gross margins to drop as a result. The company blames the dip both on the later launches of phones like the Bold for AT&T and the multi-carrier release of the Storm.

FCC Reveals T-Mobile Shadow II

T-Mobile Shadow II</ins>Documents that appear to show the successor to the T-Mobile Shadow have become public on the FCC web site. The HTC-made device is very similar to the original Shadow, with the main differences being Windows Mobile 6.1, a faster processor, and a more rounded design. The draft user manual also lists separate battery life times for GSM and UMA, indicating the phone may support T-Mobile’s UMA-based Unlimited HotSpot Calling service. The documents show nearly identical features, including 2.6-inch QVGA display, spinning scroll wheel, slide-out 20-key text keyboard, 2 megapixel camera, Wi-Fi, microSD memory card slot, and quad-band GSM/EDGE. No information is available on a release date.

Motorola EM35Motorola has announced a new music-focused ROKR handset - the EM35 slider. Spec-wise, it’s pretty much a mid-range affair. No information regarding price, or availability, has been released by Motorola.

The EM35 sports a scroll wheel, for navigating through music, as well as Motorola’s MOTOMUSIC music player app, which connects directly to the company’s music service. Technical specifications are as follows:

iPhone Apps in the App Store hits the 10,000 mark

iPhone Apps148Apps, which tracks and reviews iPhone Apps, says 10,000 applications have now been released on the iPhone App store (the site is named after the fact that you can add up to 148 applications to an iPhone or iPod touch).

A tribute page shows a mini icon for every application. And it also gives some interesting data. About 24% of apps are free; 35% cost $.99. The average cost is $3.12, including free apps. About 34% are games or entertainment, and there are 49 weather related apps for the iPhone despite the fact that a weather app is built in.

Sprint and Clearwire Finalize Merger

Today Sprint announced that it has completed the merger of its Xohm Wimax unit with Clearwire Corporation. Sprint contributed all of its 2.5 GHz spectrum and its WiMAX-related assets. Comcast, Intel, Time Warner Cable, Google and Bright House Networks all combined to contribute $3.2 billion in cash to help the company get started. Clearwire plans to provide Wimax-based high-speed wireless Internet services.

Ten million 5 MP+ Samsung cameraphones sold this year

The megapixel race shows no sign of slowing down, what with 12 MP units to be available to implement in handsets from early next year. It’s been revealed by Samsung that the company has shifted ten million units, worldwide, of 5 MP and 8 MP cameraphones, to far this year. It’s wise to assume most of those sold were 5 MP phones, as the company has more 5 MP, than 8 MP handsets available on the market. This huge number was reached, in the second week of this month.
